This course teaches clinicians how to identify and respond to client behaviors that interfere with treatment, relevant for expert and novice clinicians alike. This course specifically focuses on problematic behaviors that make it extremely difficult (if not impossible) to provide therapy. This course teaches clinicians how to manage behaviors that interfere with the client receiving therapy, as well as behaviors that burn out therapists when these behaviors occur in individual therapy/counseling, individual case management, and one-on-one counseling sessions.

Theory and assumptions in Therapy Interfering Behaviors (TIBs)
Basic Steps in responding to TIBs
Keep the intervention from back-firing by paying attention to style
Manage emotions when they interfere with treating TIBs (therapist desire to avoid, anger, judgmentalness, etc.)
Course Objectives
Understand the theoretical framework necessary for responding to and managing client behaviors that interfere with therapy
Combine acceptance/validation strategies with a Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) approach in a dialectical fashion in order to manage TIBs
Identify/accept/understand assumptions about your clients that you should hold when treating TIBs
Identify/accept/understand the assumptions about you as a therapist when treating TIBs
Identify/accept/understand the assumptions about therapy interfering behaviors
Orient client to therapy interfering behaviors and how they will be addressed in therapy
Identify in your mind what behaviors interfere with therapy
Identify client non-attentive therapy interfering behaviors
Identify client non-collaborative therapy interfering behaviors
Identify client non-compliant therapy interfering behaviors
Identify client behaviors that push your personal limits
Identify client behaviors that push your organizations limits
Identify behaviors that decrease your motivation to continue therapy
Understand the concept of limits and the role they play in therapy interfering behaviors
Determine your own personal limits
Identify your organization's limits
Understand the difference between limits and boundaries
Identify the most important limit-pushing behavior
Prioritize what to target when there are multiple TIBs
Identify the TIBs that are likely to destroy therapy
Identify TIBs that are immediately interfering

Know when to extend limits and how to do so in a consistent manner

Respond to a client who refuses to modify their interfering behavior
How to respond to your own emotional dysregulation
Continuing Education
